California Car Accident Statistics

While any decrease is encouraging, these numbers remain significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels. California’s traffic fatality count has risen roughly 29% over the past decade, driven by increases in speeding, impaired driving, and distracted driving. At the national level, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that 39,345 people died in traffic crashes across the United States in 2024, with California ranking among the states with the highest totals.

Pedestrian and Bicycle Fatalities

California is consistently one of the deadliest states for pedestrians and cyclists. In 2023, 1,106 pedestrians were killed in traffic-related incidents statewide, a decrease from 1,213 in 2022, but still a staggeringly high number. Bicycle fatalities also declined, from 183 in 2022 to 145 in 2023, though bicycle accidents remain a persistent safety concern, particularly in urban areas with inadequate cycling infrastructure.

Pedestrian accidents are especially concentrated in densely populated cities and along high-speed corridors without adequate crosswalks, lighting, or traffic calming features. Distracted driving. Texting, phone use, and other forms of driver distraction contribute to thousands of collisions each year. Because distracted driving is often underreported in crash data; drivers rarely admit to it, the true scope of the problem is likely larger than the statistics suggest.

Failure to yield. Failure to yield the right-of-way is a leading factor in intersection crashes, which account for a substantial portion of all traffic collisions in California.
