California Car Accident Statistics

Contact Us

California is one of the most dangerous states in the country for drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and cyclists. With nearly 40 million residents and some of the busiest highways in the nation, the state consistently records thousands of traffic-related fatalities and hundreds of thousands of injury collisions each year. Understanding the scope of the problem, and the patterns behind it; provides important context for anyone who has been injured in an accident or wants to understand the risks they face on California roads.

Statewide Fatality Trends

According to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), traffic fatalities in California decreased nearly 11% from 4,539 in 2022 to 4,061 in 2023. The mileage death rate,  the number of fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled, also fell from 1.34 to 1.26 during the same period.

While any decrease is encouraging, these numbers remain significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels. California’s traffic fatality count has risen roughly 29% over the past decade, driven by increases in speeding, impaired driving, and distracted driving. At the national level, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that 39,345 people died in traffic crashes across the United States in 2024, with California ranking among the states with the highest totals.

Pedestrian and Bicycle Fatalities

California is consistently one of the deadliest states for pedestrians and cyclists. In 2023, 1,106 pedestrians were killed in traffic-related incidents statewide, a decrease from 1,213 in 2022, but still a staggeringly high number. Bicycle fatalities also declined, from 183 in 2022 to 145 in 2023, though bicycle accidents remain a persistent safety concern, particularly in urban areas with inadequate cycling infrastructure.

Pedestrian accidents are especially concentrated in densely populated cities and along high-speed corridors without adequate crosswalks, lighting, or traffic calming features. In San Diego County, pedestrian deaths have been a growing concern along major arterial roads in communities including Oceanside, Chula Vista, and El Cajon.

Motorcycle Fatalities

Motorcyclists face some of the highest fatality risks on California roads. In 2023, 583 motorcyclists were killed statewide, down from 649 in 2022. Despite representing a small fraction of total vehicle traffic, motorcyclists account for a disproportionate share of traffic deaths because of their exposure to impact forces and the lack of structural protection.

California is the only state in the nation that explicitly permits lane splitting,  the practice of riding between lanes of slow or stopped traffic. While lane splitting can reduce rear-end collision risk for motorcyclists, it introduces other hazards, particularly when done at high speeds or in heavy traffic. If you or a loved one has been injured in a motorcycle crash, a San Diego motorcycle accident lawyer can help you navigate the claims process.

Leading Causes of Fatal Accidents

The same factors drive the majority of fatal and serious-injury accidents in California year after year.

Speeding. Excessive speed was a contributing factor in a significant share of fatal crashes statewide. According to UC Berkeley’s Safe Transportation Research and Education Center, approximately 35% of the 4,285 traffic fatalities in California in 2021 involved excessive speed.

Impaired driving. Alcohol-impaired driving fatalities decreased slightly from 1,419 in 2022 to 1,355 in 2023, but driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs remains one of the leading causes of preventable traffic deaths.

Distracted driving. Texting, phone use, and other forms of driver distraction contribute to thousands of collisions each year. Because distracted driving is often underreported in crash data; drivers rarely admit to it, the true scope of the problem is likely larger than the statistics suggest.

Failure to yield. Failure to yield the right-of-way is a leading factor in intersection crashes, which account for a substantial portion of all traffic collisions in California.

San Diego County Accident Data

San Diego County sees a high volume of traffic collisions due to its large population, extensive highway network, and heavy commuter traffic. Major highways including Interstate 5, Interstate 8, Interstate 15, and State Route 163 are among the most heavily traveled corridors in the county, and among the most dangerous.

Car accidents in San Diego are frequently caused by congestion-related rear-end collisions, high-speed freeway crashes, and intersection incidents involving distracted or impaired drivers. Truck accidents are also common along the I-5 and I-8 corridors, where commercial vehicles travel between the Port of San Diego, the U.S.-Mexico border, and distribution centers throughout the region.

What These Numbers Mean for Accident Victims

Behind every statistic is a real person whose life was permanently changed; or ended, by a preventable accident. If you or a loved one has been injured or lost in a California traffic collision, these numbers underscore the importance of holding negligent drivers and other at-fault parties accountable.
